The second child and only son of a mechanical engineer and an artist, Dr. Watts grew up in Holden, a small town in central Massachusetts. He was drawn to practice and live in Newburyport over 30 years ago, as the close proximity to the ocean and mountains fit his passion for sailing and skiing quite nicely.
Dr. Watts received his Doctor of Optometry degree from the Massachusetts College of Optometry in Boston, and continued his studies at the Gesell Institute of Child Development in New York City. He spent his first two years as a practicing Optometrist in the Army, stationed at Reynolds Army Hospital in Oklahoma and the 121st Evac Hospital near Seoul, South Korea.
The Watts family consists of wonderful wife Marilyn, who is a former dental hygienist and longtime gardener extraordinaire. They have one son Andrew and his wife Tara, who live in Newburyport. Their daughter Sarah and her husband Jason also live in Newburyport. Sarah and Jason recently welcomed the first grandchild to the family, Rebecca. Dr. Watts and Marilyn are enjoying their duties as first time grandparents more than they could have imagined. Although, baby Becca is not the only new addition to the Watts family. Casey is the newest Golden Retriever puppy to live at the Watts household alongside their two cats.
Always civic minded, Dr. Watts has sung gospel on stage at the Firehouse, has chaired fund raisers for the Custom House Maritime Museum, was chairman of the Board of Deacons at Central Congregational Church, has served on the Board of Trustees at the Firehouse Society for the Development of Arts and Humanities. Currently, he is an active member and former President of the Sons and Daughters of the First Settlers of Newbury.
Dr. Watts service to the Optometric community includes his time as President of the Massachusetts Society of Optometrist and National Board of Optometry Clinical Examiner. Currently he is a member of the American Optometric Association, the Massachusetts Society of Optometrists, an Advisory Board member of TLC Laser Vision Center of Massachusetts, and an Adjunct Clinical Faculty member of the New England College of Optometry in Boston.
During his leisure time, Dr. Watts and Marilyn love to play in their extensive perennial and shade gardens, which have been featured on the Newburyport garden tour in previous years. When they are not playing in the dirt, they can be found rooting for the Redsox and Patriots. Visiting the New Hampshire White Mountains and Sanibel Island looking for sea-shells are some of their favorites. No Christmas holiday would be complete however, without....not one....not two.....but three fully decorated Christmas trees. Yes, Marilyn really likes Christmas.
Dr. Chad McDonald - Optometrist
Have you ever met a native Mainer you didn't like? Dr. McDonald's enjoyment for the New England way of life comes from his roots in rural Jay, Maine. Now living in the Newburyport area, he enjoys the quaint atmosphere and variety of activities coastal New England has to offer.
A graduate of the University of New England in Biddeford, Maine and the New England College of Optometry in Boston, Dr. McDonald distinguished himself for superior patient care, graduating with honors in primary care, contact lenses, pediatrics and low-vision care.
Dr. McDonald completed his residency training with the Boston Medical Center and the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. At the Lighthouse Center in New York City, he furthered his education in comprehensive care for the visually disabled.
Dr. McDonald is a member of the Massachusetts Society of Optometrists and the American Optometric Association, serves as a Senior Examiner for the National Board of Examiners in Optometry, is an Adjunct Clinical Faculty member of the New England College of Optometry in Boston, is a board member and past president for the Newburyport Lions Club and enjoys the excitement of serving as chairman for the annual Bed Race during Yankee Homecoming week.
Outside the office, he likes spending time outdoors with his family. His wife is Dr. Rebecca Boyer, an OB/GYN physician practicing with Women's Health Care of Newburyport and Haverhill. They have a son named Owen. Dr. McDonald is a self-described sports junkie. His favorites are rooting for all the Boston sports teams. He enjoys skiing, road and mountain biking, tennis and hiking. Kayaking has always been a summer favorite and he has found the current in the Merrimac River to be "very entertaining." Dr. McDonald loves a good movie, enjoys reading books on American History, and has been known to eat fresh picked strawberries by the bucket full. No bio on Dr. McDonald would be complete, however, without mentioning his famous cat Seymour or his addiction to cinnamon.
